S3DA Design provided structural engineering services for a new 28′ x 17′ patio cover designed to enhance the outdoor living space of an existing residence. The scope focused on delivering a safe, code-compliant structural solution that integrates efficiently with the home’s existing construction.

• Structural loading analysis for wind, seismic, dead, and live loads 

• Structural analysis and design of the 28′ x 17′ patio cover 

• Design of beams, rafters, posts, and perimeter framing members 

• Connection design for: 

• beam-to-post 

• rafter-to-beam 

• ledger attachment to the existing structure 

• Footing and foundation design, including: 

• overturning checks 

• sliding checks 

• bearing checks 

• Anchorage design to the existing residence where attached 

Key Challenges & Solutions 

A patio cover may appear simple, but its structural performance depends heavily on how new framing connects to the existing residence and transfers lateral and vertical loads safely to the foundation.
