Structural design for a Residential Container Home -Santa Rosa, CA

S3DA Design provided structural engineering design for a residential container home in Santa Rosa, CA, supporting a modern housing concept that combines modular construction with site-specific structural performance requirements. The project required a detailed structural approach to ensure the container-based residence could safely resist gravity and lateral loads while accommodating architectural modifications.

S3DA’s Scope

  • Structural load analyses for wind, seismic, snow, dead, and live loads
  • Structural design of foundations
  • Design of container-to-foundation tie-downs
  • Engineering of container openings and edge stiffeners
  • Structural design for wood framing infill and second-floor areas
  • Design of beams, headers, posts, floor joists, and roof rafters
  • Design of chords, collectors, shear/braced walls, and required connectors
  • Engineering of container module modifications, including:
  • Perimeter ring beams
  • Lintel frames at large window and door openings
  • Corrosion and weld notes
  • Uplift and overturning checks
  • Diaphragm and drift checks
  • Deck diaphragm tie-ins and holdown design

Key Challenges & Solutions

Container homes present a unique structural challenge because the original steel module must often be modified to support large openings, multi-level framing transitions, and site-specific loading conditions. For this Santa Rosa project, S3DA developed a coordinated structural solution that addressed both the integrity of the modified container modules and the performance of the overall residential system.

Our engineering approach focused on reinforcing critical cut openings with lintel framing and edge stiffeners, designing reliable tie-down connections to the foundation, and integrating wood-framed infill and second-floor structural elements into a cohesive lateral and gravity load path. This type of integrated structural coordination aligns with S3DA’s broader design philosophy of delivering efficient, practical, and cost-conscious solutions backed by nationwide structural expertise.

The Result

The result was a robust structural design package tailored to the demands of modern container-home construction in California. By combining detailed structural analysis with constructible framing and connection solutions, S3DA supported a safer, more efficient path toward permit-ready documentation and successful project execution. S3DA’s experience across residential work, structural systems, and coordinated engineering delivery supports this type of specialized project approach.
