The building is an existing office building that is being converted to residential and hotel occupancies. The HVAC system of the building consists of a 1,500-ton electric centrifugal chiller plant supplying chilled water to ceiling hung fan coils and floor mounted air handling units. The chiller plant rejects its heat to a 2-cell cooling tower which was sized with added redundancy.
The location of the cooling tower was carefully coordinated with the surrounding structure around in order to allow the proper area for the CFM to enter the cooling tower intakes. Adequate clearance between the cooling tower intakes and the surrounding structure was determined using the applicable ASHRAE guidelines and input from the cooling tower manufacturer. The chiller plant is piped in a parallel configuration to allow for the simultaneous sequencing of the chillers.
